Transfer Pattern Markings & Embellish with the Marking Fringe Foot!

During our recent Toolin' Around Two Husqvarna Viking Event, Katrina Walker demonstrated wonderful uses for the Marking Foot, that can also be called the Fringe Foot.

This foot has a couple of different names because of its many uses. Many of you may already know that this foot is useful for transferring pattern markings (like those markings for darts) to your fabric. The magic of this foot is that it creates a wonderful loopy stitch that stays where you want until you pull the bobbin thread to easily remove it. So your pattern markings stay in until you simply pull one thread to remove; no carbon paper or other manual processes to transfer markings.

But the Marking Foot doesn't stop there. It becomes the Fringe Foot when you decide you'd like to add special embellishments or fringe to your project. During her Toolin' Around Two Event, sewing expert, Katrina Walker, wore a lovely jacket demonstrating the beauty and originality the Marking foot can bring to a garment or project. Exciting Things are Happening---Come by and See Us!

New Projects ahead for Sewing for Hospice

The Highland Sewing Center's customers are donating their time for more sewing and another Sewing for Hospice event.

This time we're getting together and sewing Memory Bears. We're repurposing a special, but worn piece of clothing into a bear that will bring comfort and memories to a hospice patient and family.

Won't this bear be bright and cheery?

And here's another being crafted out of a favorite but worn White Sox jersey. It will be really special when complete.

Come join us on Thursday's. It's great to get together, sew, learn new skills, and know that we're helping the community. 

 

Happenings at the Highland Sewing Center

Joan got the quilts that were all quilted for the cause labeled and to the hospice last week and there are still room for more quilts.

So this Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday quilters are bringing in their sewing machines for some more quilting fun. This time each quilter will be putting together a strip block using a new technique that Joan will teach.

Won't you join us on May 23, 24, & 25 for some fun learning new techniques and quilting for a cause? Just bring in your sewing machine and accessories, Joan has the fabric all ready to quilt.

Coming up in June is a class on the kitchen scrubbies---have you seen them on our facebook page? They are so new, so cute, and absolutely must makes. And don't forget to join us for the next Applique Block Quilt square where you learn to applique using your machine's specialty feet.

  

Tip of the Week

So you're ready to buy a sewing machine. The options can be daunting and confusing. And like a good customer said today there are sewing machines that cost as much as some cars. But which one is the sewing machine for your needs?

The first thing you should consider is what you are going to use the machine for and how much you will use it.

Today you can purchase a decent machine for around $100.00. This entry level machine will come with a few stitches---straight stitch, zig zag, and a couple of decorative stitches. This machine will do average weight fabrics fairly well and, with the right needle will handle light weight denims. If you are planning to use the machine mainly for occasional mending this might be the option for you.

If you plan on sewing clothes or home fashions and using the machine once or twice per month you may want to go with a little better machine. For $300.00--$500.00 you can get a machine with features that can help you with anything from sewing that 2 year old's wardrobe to sewing drapes and curtains and even quilting. Not only do you get additional decorative stitch options, but several styles of button holes, extra presser foot lift for heavier or thicker fabric applications, twin needle sewing,  and drop feed dogs for free motion quilting and embroidery applications.

If you are mainly interested in home decor ---quilting or embroidery, then a new embroidery machine would be the one for you. Embroidery machines start around $1000.00 and many do regular sewing too. Hoop size drives the cost of the embroidery machines. Hoops start at 4"x4" and can go up to 14" or more. Some machines come with software so that you can make your own designs, use your clipart, or even make embroidery from your digital photographs. One option to look for in an embroidery machine is a USB connection to your PC so that you'll be able to transfer designs directly from computer to sewing machine without special cards, readers, or equipment. These machines also have bigger work surfaces---making quilting much easier.

But even the most expensive machines won't meet your needs until you know how to use them. Free classes like those that come with your new sewing machine when purchased at the Northwest Indiana Sewing Centers, friendly advise, and answers and help with any questions and issues that arise after your purchase insure that you will be satisfied.

First Make and Take Class in Highland, Indiana Store

Tomorrow, November 8, 2011 is the first Make and Take class at the Highland Sewing Center. This class begins at 8:00. During the class Joan will be teaching everyone how to make these adorable Christmas Tree Napkins. Each napkin is made from 2-22" pieces of fabric.

The napkin is a very generous size and would make a wonderful addition to your holiday table---or what a wonderful hostess gift! 

Skills learned in the making of the napkin will include sewing with a double needle. For more information call Joan at 219-838-5433.

Announcing Classes at Highland Indiana Sewing Center

Class Project: Holiday Redwork Design/The Stitch Connection  

The manager of the Northwest Indiana Sewing Center in Highland Indiana has been busy getting together a classroom area for some creative and informative sewing classes.

This week the classroom area is ready and Joan is excited to announce new classes will begin this week. The project that students will be working on over the next few weeks is a machine embroidery Christmas quilt that should be finished just in time for Christmas.












Classes begin on Friday, October 21st. The class filled up quickly, although due to last minute cancellations, there still may be a couple of spots available.  If not, if there is enough interest, Joan is definitely open to holding a second class.
